Chiropractic for Foot Health

Foot Pain
As with the rest of the skeletal system, the joints of the feet can become stuck in an abnormal position. This changes the biomechanics of the foot, causing pain. My patients frequently report a dramatic decrease in foot pain after just a few adjustments. The good news is foot joints usually stabilize very quickly and don't need a lot of chiropractic care. Even one or two visits can make a dramatic difference.

In the past, I have adjusted a patient's feet only if they complained of foot pain. But I noticed last year that patients who received a foot adjustment needed fewer knee, hip and spinal adjustments! A light bulb went on. Of course! The feet are the foundation for everything above! So now I check every patient's feet, on every visit.

Chiropractic is not what people usually turn to for foot pain...but perhaps they should!  When people think about foot health, they normally look to good shoes with strong arch support. But really this is like wearing a back brace all the time; it weakens the arches of the feet causing them to fall even further than before. Just as any other muscles needs exercise, so do the foot muscles. Arch weakness can lead to hammer toes, plantar fascitis, heel spurs, achilles tendonitis and other foot pain. Women often cram their feet into shoes forcing the toes together. This weakens the muscles that spread the toes, eventually causing the large and/or small toes to turn inward causing bunions. To address foot strength, I often recommend yoga sandals along with chiropractic care.

Yoga Sandals for Foot Strength

Yoga Sandals
A number of years ago, a 76 year old female patient taught me about yoga sandals. Her hammer toes were completely resolved simply by walking in them regularly. I was amazed and after doing some research I learned that yoga sandals spread your toes and as you walk in them you strengthen the muscles of your feet including the arches.

I don't sell yoga sandals, but I have been recommending them for several years to my patients. My patients report that they love yoga sandals and find them comfortable. Best of all, yoga sandals along with chiropractic care dramatically reduces foot pain by keeping the feet strong. They come in women's and men's sizes and are quite stable to walk in. I can even run after my dog while wearing them! For about $35 per pair, I consider them a great investment in the health of your feet.

Below: A patient testimonial describing how wearing yoga sandals a few times per week for 1 to 1.5 years cured a bunion.
